Treatments

numerous treatments exist to successfully repigment patches

Vitiligo may not be curable, but numerous treatments exist to successfully repigment patches of colour loss.  Listed below are the most common remedies for the disease

Suction Blister Grafting

Suction blister grafting involves the creation of blisters on a donor site such as the thigh. The upper layer of skin (epidermis) is removed from the Vitiligo area being treated.

Punch Grafting

Punch grafting is a popular surgical technique for vitiligo treatment. Tiny bits (1,5mm diameter) of full thickness skin are removed from a donor area such as the thighs, using a device called a biopsy punch.

Needling

Needling is a recently introduced treatment for vitiligo. The pigmented edges of the vitiligo patch are repeatedly pricked with a needle stimulating pigment cells to physically move into the non-coloured patch.

Non-cultured grafting

Non-cultured melanocyte rich epidermal cell suspensions may be made up from epidermis removed from a donor area. These cells are grafted directly onto denuded epidermis in a vitiligo area.

Cultured melanocyte grafting

Autologous cultured epidermal cell grafting is a technique where melanocytes grown in the laboratory are grafted onto areas of pigment loss, after surgically removing the epidermis from the involved area.

Pearls from the literature

13 patients with segmental vitiligo were treated with 1mm punch grafts followed by treatment with Excimer laser (11 patients) and narow band UVB (2 patients). The treatment was highly successful in this group of under 16 years age

VSSA LOGO

The black and white colours of the logo represent the discolouration of patches of vitiligo.

The hands are a common and extremely noticeable site of vitiligo involvement.

The hands are reaching out, firstly for help and secondly towards a sphere.

The sphere represents a whole and intact shape, hence the desire to progress from incomplete to complete repigmentation.  A sphere is defined an an object where every point of the surface is equidistant from the centre.  Vitiligo patients are united in this way by a common sense of purpose and togetherness.

A sphere is a celestial body, thus reaching out to a higher power.

The sphere also represents the sun, which is known from ancient times to be central to the healing of vitiligo patches.  Modern methods of sunlight delivery to the skin include phototherapy (UVB), photochemotherapy (PUVA) and excimer laser, all of which are based on light.

The person formed inside the logo, between the hands is made up of two colours representing vitiligo.
